Continuity errors can arise when our attention shifts unexpectedly. These errors occur when we fail to notice a change because we are focused on something else. Our brains have a limited capacity to pay attention to details, so when our attention is diverted, we may miss important visual information. In a study conducted by psychologists Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris, participants were asked to watch a video of people passing a basketball and count the number of passes. In the middle of the video, a person in a gorilla suit walked through the scene, thumped his chest, and then exited. Surprisingly, half of the participants did not notice the gorilla because they were too focused on counting the passes. This phenomenon is known as inattentional blindness, where we fail to see an unexpected object even when it is in plain sight.
