Continuity errors can occur when attention shifts unexpectedly from "summary" of The Invisible Gorilla by Christopher Chabris,Daniel Simons

Continuity errors can arise when our attention shifts unexpectedly. These errors occur when we fail to notice a change because we are focused on something else. Our brains have a limited capacity to pay attention to details, so when our attention is diverted, we may miss important visual information. In a study conducted by psychologists Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris, participants were asked to watch a video of people passing a basketball and count the number of passes. In the middle of the video, a person in a gorilla suit walked through the scene, thumped his chest, and then exited. Surprisingly, half of the participants did not notice the gorilla because they were too focused on counting the passes. This phenomenon is known as inattentional blindness, where we fail to see an unexpected object even when it is in plain sight. Our brains are wired to filter out irrelevant information and focus on what is deemed important at the moment. This selective attention can lead to continuity errors when a significant change occurs while our attention is elsewhere. When our attention shifts unexpectedly, we may miss critical details that can result in continuity errors. For example, in films or television shows, viewers may overlook inconsistencies in scenes if they are engrossed in the storyline. A sudden change in setting or props can go unnoticed if the viewer is not paying attention. In everyday life, continuity errors can have real-world consequences. For instance, a driver who is distracted by their phone may fail to notice a pedestrian crossing the street, leading to a dangerous situation. Similarly, a person engrossed in a conversation may miss important cues in their surroundings, such as a fire alarm going off. To avoid continuity errors, it is essential to be mindful of our attention and actively work to maintain focus on the task at hand. By being aware of the potential for inattentional blindness and other cognitive biases, we can improve our ability to notice changes and inconsistencies in our environment.
