Personalization on the internet can limit our perspective from "summary" of The Internet of Us: Knowing More and Understanding Less in the Age of Big Data by Michael P. Lynch

In an age where the internet is increasingly personalized, our online experiences are curated to cater to our preferences and interests. While this may seem convenient and efficient, it can also have the unintended consequence of limiting our perspective. When algorithms tailor our search results, news feeds, and advertisements based on our past behavior and preferences, we are more likely to be exposed to information that confirms our existing beliefs and biases. This creates what is known as a "filter bubble," where we are surrounded by information that reinforces our own views and opinions. As a result, we may become insulated from alternative perspectives, diverse viewpoints, and challenging ideas that could broaden our understanding of the world. Rather than being exposed to a variety of opinions and information, we are increasingly confined to an echo chamber of our own making. This can lead to a narrowing of our intellectual horizons, a reinforcement of stereotypes and prejudices, and a stunted growth in our ability to think critically and empathetically. Moreover, personalization on the internet can also have a detrimental impact on our ability to engage in meaningful dialogue and debate with others. When we are only exposed to information that aligns with our preconceived notions, we are less likely to encounter opposing viewpoints that could challenge and sharpen our own arguments. This can result in a polarization of society, as individuals retreat into their own ideological enclaves and become less willing to engage with those who hold different beliefs.
  1. The personalized nature of the internet has the potential to limit our exposure to diverse perspectives, stifle our intellectual growth, and hinder our capacity for empathy and understanding. By recognizing the limitations of personalization and actively seeking out alternative viewpoints and information, we can work towards broadening our perspective and cultivating a more open-minded and informed worldview. It is essential that we remain vigilant in questioning the information that is presented to us online and actively seek out diverse sources of information in order to counteract the narrowing effects of personalization.
