Nature can be both friend and foe from "summary" of THE HATCHET by Hannah Grissman

Throughout the story, nature proves to be a force that can either save or destroy. At times, nature offers its abundance to the protagonist, providing him with food and resources that help him survive. The lake, for example, becomes a source of sustenance for Brian, offering him fish to eat and water to drink. The lush forest surrounding him also provides shelter and materials for building a fire. However, nature also displays its harsh and unforgiving side. The same lake that provides Brian with food also exposes him to danger, as he must constantly be wary of predators lurking beneath its surface. The forest, while offering shelter, also harbors threats such as wild animals and extreme weather conditions that Brian must contend with. In this way, nature is depicted as a double-edged sword, capable of offering both blessings and curses to those who find themselves at its mercy. It is a reminder of the delicate balance that exists between man and the natural world, where one must learn to navigate its challenges and harness its resources in order to survive.
  1. The protagonist's ability to adapt and learn from nature's dual nature plays a crucial role in his survival. By respecting its power and understanding its nuances, Brian is able to navigate the wilderness and emerge stronger and wiser. Nature, therefore, becomes both a teacher and a test for the protagonist, shaping his character and guiding his journey towards self-discovery.
