When you enhance the performance of everything else in the system without addressing the constraint, you may inadvertently create inefficiencies. For instance, if one machine operates faster than its downstream counterpart, the backlog will simply shift, not disappear. The true pathway to improvement lies in elevating the constraint's capacity. After pinpointing the constraint, the next step is to exploit it fully. This means ensuring that the constraint is always busy, maximizing its output without incurring unnecessary costs. For example, if a particular workstation is the bottleneck, focus on streamlining its operations. This may involve reducing setup times or ensuring that it never sits idle. Once the constraint has been effectively exploited, the focus shifts to subordinating all other processes to support it. This involves aligning the entire system's workflow to ensure that non-constraint resources operate in harmony with the constraint. Lastly, if there is an opportunity to elevate the constraint, such as investing in additional capacity or resources, it should be pursued. Improvement is an ongoing cycle; once one constraint is alleviated, another will emerge. This cyclical process promotes continuous enhancement, driving the system toward greater efficiency and effectiveness.
