Unconventional parenting methods from "summary" of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
In the Walls family, parenting was far from conventional. Rex and Rose Mary Walls raised their children in a nomadic lifestyle, moving from place to place in search of work and a place to call home. They did not believe in traditional education, opting instead to homeschool their children and encourage them to pursue their own interests and passions. This unconventional approach to education meant that the Walls children were often left to their own devices, learning important life skills through trial and error. Rose Mary Walls, on the other hand, had a more hands-off approach to parenting. She was often consumed by her own artistic pursuits and would neglect her children's basic needs, such as food and shelter. Instead of providing for them in a traditional sense, she encouraged them to fend for themselves and find creative solutions to their problems. This lack of structure and stability in their upbringing forced the Walls children to become resourceful and resilient at a young age. Despite the unconventional nature of their parenting methods, the Walls children grew up to be strong, independent individuals. They learned to adapt to their ever-changing environment and to rely on themselves for support. While their childhood was far from easy, it taught them important lessons about perseverance, self-reliance, and the power of resilience. In the end, the Walls children were able to overcome their tumultuous upbringing and find success in their own unique ways.
