Constant technological assistance can lead to deskilling from "summary" of The Glass Cage by Nicholas Carr

The more we rely on technology to guide our actions, the more our own skills and knowledge begin to wither away. This phenomenon is not limited to factory workers or drivers; it affects all of us in various ways. From pilots who have become overly reliant on autopilot systems to doctors who trust algorithms over their own judgment, the danger of deskilling is ever-present. Constant technological assistance can lead to deskilling because it encourages us to defer to machines rather than honing our own abilities. We become overly dependent on the convenience and efficiency that technology provides, sacrificing our own expertise in the process. As technology advances and becomes more integrated into our lives, the risk of deskilling only grows greater. The more we allow technology to take over tasks that we used to do ourselves, the less we are able to perform those tasks independently. Our skills gradually erode, leaving us vulnerable and ill-prepared to handle situations when technology is not available. We become like children who rely on their parents to solve all their problems, unable to think for ourselves or take action without external assistance. In the workplace, the impact of deskilling can be particularly damaging. Employees who become too reliant on technology may lose the ability to think critically, solve problems creatively, or adapt to new challenges. This not only hampers their own professional development but also undermines the overall effectiveness of the organization. Deskilled workers are less efficient, less productive, and less capable of driving innovation. To combat the dangers of deskilling, we must strike a balance between using technology as a tool and maintaining our own skills and knowledge. We should not view technology as a replacement for human expertise but as a supplement to it. By staying actively engaged in our work, continuously learning and practicing our skills, we can prevent deskilling and ensure that we remain competent and capable in an increasingly technological world.
