Let go of numbing behaviors from "summary" of The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown

One of the key components of living a wholehearted life is being able to let go of numbing behaviors. Numbing behaviors are the ways in which we try to avoid feeling difficult emotions. These can include things like overeating, overspending, overworking, or using substances like alcohol or drugs to numb our feelings. While numbing behaviors may provide temporary relief, they ultimately prevent us from fully experiencing life. By letting go of numbing behaviors, we open ourselves up to the full range of human emotions, both positive and negative. This can be scary, as it means facing our vulnerabilities and insecurities head-on. However, it is only by allowing ourselves to feel these emotions that we can truly connect with others and live authentically. One way to let go of numbing behaviors is to practice mindfulness. This involves being present in the moment and fully experiencing our emotions without judgment. By cultivating mindfulness, we can learn to sit with our feelings, no matter how uncomfortable they may be, and ultimately let them pass through us. Another important aspect of letting go of numbing behaviors is learning to practice self-compassion. This means treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would offer to a friend in a similar situation. By being gentle with ourselves and acknowledging our own humanity, we can begin to let go of the need to numb our emotions.
