Parents need to be flexible in their approach from "summary" of The Explosive Child by Ross W. Greene, PhD

In the heat of the moment, it can be all too easy to fall back on old patterns of behavior. We all have our default modes of responding when things get tough. But when it comes to parenting a child with explosive behavior, those default modes may not always be the most effective. In fact, they may even exacerbate the situation.
