Detachment from desires aids spiritual progress from "summary" of The Experience of Insight by Joseph Goldstein

In the practice of mindfulness meditation, one of the key principles that we encounter is the idea of letting go of our desires. This concept may seem contradictory at first glance – after all, don't we usually think that pursuing our desires is what brings us happiness and fulfillment? However, as we delve deeper into the teachings of mindfulness, we begin to see that attachment to desires actually causes us suffering. When we are constantly chasing after our desires, we are never fully satisfied. We may achieve temporary happiness when we fulfill a desire, but that happiness quickly fades as we move on to the next thing we want. This endless cycle of desire and fulfillment ultimately leaves us feeling empty and unfulfilled. By practicing detachment from our desires, we are able to break free from this cycle. We learn to observe our desires without getting caught up in them, allowing them to come and go without judgment or attachment. As we cultivate this sense of detachment, we begin to see that our desires are not the source of true happiness. Instead of looking externally for fulfillment, we start to turn inward, finding a sense of peace and contentment that doesn't depend on external circumstances. This inner peace is what ultimately leads to spiritual progress, as we begin to see the impermanent and unsatisfactory nature of our desires. In this way, detachment from desires becomes a powerful tool for spiritual growth. It allows us to let go of the things that are holding us back and to move closer to a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. As we continue on this journey of self-discovery, we can begin to experience true insight and liberation from the suffering caused by our attachments.
