Evolutionary change is nonlinear from "summary" of The Evolution of Everything by Matt Ridley

Evolutionary change is not linear. It does not follow a straight line from point A to point B. Instead, it is a complex, winding path with many twists and turns along the way. This nonlinear nature of evolution can be seen in various aspects of life, from the development of organisms to the progression of technology. One of the reasons why evolutionary change is nonlinear is that it is driven by a multitude of factors that interact with each other in unpredictable ways. These factors can include environmental changes, genetic mutations, competition between species, and many others. As a result, the trajectory of evolution is constantly changing, with no predetermined endpoint in sight. Moreover, the effects of these factors are often amplified by feedback loops, where one change leads to another and so on. This can create sudden shifts in the course of evolution, causing rapid and unexpected changes to occur. For example, a small genetic mutation in a population of organisms can lead to a cascade of effects that ultimately result in a new species emerging. Another reason for the nonlinear nature of evolution is that it is a process of trial and error. Organisms and technologies are constantly being tested by their environment, and those that are best suited to survive and reproduce will pass on their traits to future generations. This process of natural selection is a messy and unpredictable one, leading to a non-linear progression of evolution.
  1. The concept that evolutionary change is nonlinear highlights the complexity and unpredictability of the natural world. It serves as a reminder that evolution is not a simple, linear process, but rather a dynamic and ever-changing phenomenon that is shaped by a multitude of interacting factors.
