Discrimination perpetuates social stratification from "summary" of The Economics of Poverty and Discrimination by Bradley R. Schiller

Discrimination based on race, gender, or any other characteristic serves to create and perpetuate social stratification. By favoring certain groups over others, discrimination reinforces existing inequalities and maintains the status quo. Those who are discriminated against face barriers to education, employment, and other opportunities, which limits their ability to move up the social ladder. This leads to the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a privileged few, while others are left behind, trapped in poverty and marginalized from society. Social stratification is not only about differences in income or wealth, but also about access to resources, opportunities, and social networks. Discrimination restricts the access of marginalized groups to these essential resources, making it difficult for them to improve their economic and social status. This results in a cycle of poverty and disadvantage that is difficult to break. Moreover, discrimination can lead to self-fulfilling prophecies, where individuals from marginalized groups internalize negative stereotypes and beliefs about their abilities. This can undermine their self-confidence and motivation, further perpetuating their disadvantaged position in society. As a result, discrimination not only affects individuals directly but also has broader implications for social cohesion and economic development. In order to address social stratification and reduce poverty, it is essential to tackle discrimination in all its forms. This requires addressing systemic inequalities and biases that are deeply entrenched in our society. By promoting equality and inclusivity, we can create a more just and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the common good. Only by dismantling discriminatory practices and attitudes can we truly break the cycle of poverty and create a more equal and just society for all.
