Nonverbal cues often reveal more about a person's feelings than spoken words from "summary" of The Definitive Book of Body Language by Barbara Pease,Allan Pease
Nonverbal cues are powerful indicators of a person's true feelings, often speaking volumes more than the words that come out of their mouth. While spoken words can be manipulated and carefully chosen, nonverbal signals are more difficult to control or disguise. For example, a person may say they are happy, but their slumped shoulders, furrowed brow, and lack of eye contact may reveal their true feelings of sadness or disappointment. These nonverbal cues provide a more accurate reflection of their emotional state than their spoken words. In fact, research has shown that nonverbal communication makes up a significant portion of our overall message. Studies suggest that as much as 55% of communication is through body language, 38% through tone of voice, and only 7% through words themselves. This means that paying attention to nonverbal cues can give us valuable insights into a person's thoughts, feelings, and intentions. By observing gestures, facial expressions, posture, and other nonverbal signals, we can better understand the true meaning behind their words. In some cases, people may not even be consciously aware of the nonverbal signals they are sending. These cues can be subtle and automatic, providing a glimpse into their subconscious thoughts and emotions. By honing our skills in reading body language, we can become more effective communicators and develop stronger connections with others. Being attuned to nonverbal cues allows us to pick up on hidden messages, detect deception, and respond more empathetically to the needs of those around us.- Nonverbal cues play a crucial role in understanding a person's true feelings and intentions. By paying attention to gestures, facial expressions, and other nonverbal signals, we can gain valuable insights that go beyond what is said aloud.
