Highcontext vs low-context communication styles vary across cultures from "summary" of The Culture Map (INTL ED) by Erin Meyer

In some cultures, much of the message is implicit, relying heavily on nonverbal cues and context to convey meaning. This is what we call high-context communication. In these cultures, people tend to be more attuned to subtle signals and shared background knowledge, assuming that others will understand the unspoken messages behind their words. Japan, China, and many other Asian countries are known for their high-context communication styles. On the other hand, in low-context cultures, such as Germany, the United States, and Scandinavia, the message tends to be more explicit and direct. People in these cultures value clarity and precision in communication, often spelling out their thoughts and expectations explicitly. They rely less on shared context and nonverbal cues to convey their message, preferring to be straightforward and to the point. The differences between high-context and low-context communication styles can lead to misunderstandings and confusion when people from different cultures interact. For example, a high-context communicator may feel frustrated by what they perceive as the overly blunt and impersonal communication style of a low-context communicator. Conversely, a low-context communicator may find a high-context communicator to be vague or ambiguous in their communication, leading to misinterpretations and miscommunication. Understanding the cultural dimension of context in communication is crucial for effective cross-cultural interactions. By being aware of and adapting to the communication style of the culture you are engaging with, you can avoid misunderstandings and build stronger relationships. Recognizing when to be more explicit or implicit in your communication can help bridge the gap between high-context and low-context cultures, fostering better understanding and collaboration.
