The struggle for control of Mexico was a fierce and bloody one, marked by numerous battles that raged across the land. From the moment Hernan Cortes set foot on the shores of the New World, he was met with fierce resistance from the mighty Aztec Empire. The Aztecs, under the leadership of their emperor Montezuma, were determined to defend their homeland from the Spanish invaders at all costs. Cortes, however, was equally determined to conquer Mexico and claim it for Spain. He knew that the key to victory lay in winning the support of the indigenous peoples who chafed under Aztec rule.
