The fear of death and loss motivates much of our behavior from "summary" of The Concise Laws of Human Nature by Robert Greene

The fear of death and loss is a primal instinct that resides deep within our unconscious minds. It drives much of our behavior, often without us even realizing it. When we confront our mortality, whether through a near-death experience or the loss of a loved one, we are forced to come face to face with the fragility of life. This confrontation triggers a cascade of emotions and reactions that influence our decisions and actions in ways we may not fully comprehend. Our fear of death and loss can manifest itself in various ways. It can drive us to seek power and control, as a way to protect ourselves from the unpredictable and uncontrollable nature of life. We may become obsessed with accumulating wealth and possessions, believing that they will shield us from the inevitable end. Alternatively, we may seek validation and approval from others, as a means of soothing our existential anxieties and insecurities. This fear can also lead us to avoid risk and change, preferring the safety and familiarity of our current circumstances. We may resist stepping out of our comfort zones, afraid of what lies beyond the boundaries of our known world. This reluctance to embrace uncertainty can hold us back from realizing our full potential and experiencing all that life has to offer. However, our fear of death and loss can also be a powerful motivator for growth and transformation. When we confront our mortality head-on, we are forced to reassess our priorities and values. We may gain a newfound appreciation for the present moment and a sense of urgency to live authentically and purposefully. This heightened awareness of our mortality can inspire us to take risks, pursue our passions, and make the most of our time on this earth.
