Purposes are not mental blueprints from "summary" of The Concept of Mind by Gilbert Ryle
Purposes are not mental blueprints. It is a common misconception that when we have a purpose in mind, we are essentially following a mental blueprint or plan. However, this is not the case. In reality, purposes are more like guiding principles or tendencies that direct our actions without specifying exactly how those actions should be carried out. When we say that someone has a purpose in mind, we are not saying that they have a detailed plan or set of instructions laid out in their minds. Instead, we are simply acknowledging that they have a general direction or goal towards which their actions are oriented. This distinction is important because it highlights the difference between having a purpose and having a fully-formed mental blueprint. It is worth noting that having a purpose does not necessarily imply conscious awareness or deliberation. Many of our purposes operate at a subconscious level, guiding our actions without us even being fully aware of them. For example, when we reach out to catch a ball, we do not consciously calculate the trajectory and speed of the ball; instead, our actions are guided by our purpose of catching the ball without us having to think about it. This idea challenges the traditional view of the mind as a repository of mental blueprints or plans. Instead of viewing the mind as a storage place for detailed instructions, we should see it as a dynamic system that is constantly being influenced by purposes and tendencies. This perspective helps us understand how our actions are shaped by our purposes without the need for explicit mental blueprints.- The concept that "purposes are not mental blueprints" invites us to rethink our understanding of how the mind operates. By recognizing that purposes are more like guiding principles than detailed plans, we can gain a deeper insight into the nature of human action and intentionality.
