The state, in every society, is a tool of the ruling class. It is a mechanism through which the ruling class maintains its power and enforces its interests upon the rest of society. The state is not a neutral entity that looks out for the interests of all members of society. Rather, it is an instrument of domination wielded by the ruling class to protect and perpetuate its own privilege. The ruling class, whether it be the bourgeoisie in capitalist society or the feudal lords in feudal society, uses the state to uphold the existing social order.
