Overprotection harms resilience from "summary" of The Coddling of the American Mind by Jonathan Haidt,Greg Lukianoff

The instinct to protect our children is natural and powerful. We want to shield them from harm, both physical and psychological. However, the desire to keep our children safe can sometimes lead to unintended consequences. When we overprotect our children, we prevent them from developing the resilience they need to navigate life's challenges. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, to adapt to difficult circumstances, and to grow stronger in the face of adversity. It is a crucial skill that allows individuals to thrive in an unpredictable and often harsh world. When we shield our children from every potential danger or discomfort, we deny them the opportunity to develop this essential trait. Overprotection sends the message that the world is a dangerous and hostile place, and that our children are too fragile to handle it. This can lead to a cycle of fear and avoidance, as children learn to see themselves as vulnerable and incapable. Without the chance to test their limits and learn from failure, they may struggle to cope with the inevitable challenges of adulthood. By allowing our children to face adversity and take risks, we help them build confidence in their own abilities. They learn that they can overcome obstacles and emerge stronger on the other side. This sense of mastery is essential for developing a healthy sense of self-esteem and self-efficacy. Resilience is not something that can be given or taught; it must be earned through experience. By stepping back and allowing our children to face challenges on their own, we give them the chance to develop the skills they need to thrive in an uncertain world. It is a difficult balance to strike, but by finding ways to support and encourage our children without smothering them, we can help them grow into confident, capable, and resilient individuals.
