The decline of these institutions further segregates us into likeminded bubbles from "summary" of The Big Sort by Bill Bishop

As institutions that once brought diverse groups together decline in influence, our society becomes increasingly fragmented. When we no longer have common spaces where people of different backgrounds can come together, we are more likely to surround ourselves with those who share our own beliefs and values. This leads to the formation of echo chambers where our own opinions are constantly reinforced, and opposing viewpoints are rarely heard. The decline of traditional institutions such as churches, clubs, and community organizations means that we are less likely to interact with people who have different perspectives. Instead, we gravitate towards individuals who think like us, further solidifying our own beliefs and reinforcing our biases. This creates a self-perpetuating cycle where we become more entrenched in our own worldview, making it difficult to engage with those who hold different opinions. As we retreat into our own likeminded bubbles, we lose the ability to understand and empathize with those who are different from us. Our interactions become limited to those who share our own beliefs, and we become less tolerant of dissenting viewpoints. This can lead to increased polarization and a lack of meaningful dialogue between people with opposing views. In a society where institutions that encourage diversity and dialogue are in decline, it is more important than ever to actively seek out opportunities to engage with those who have different perspectives. By stepping out of our comfort zones and engaging with people from diverse backgrounds, we can begin to break down the barriers that separate us and work towards creating a more cohesive and inclusive society.
