Beware of the status quo bias from "summary" of The Art of Thinking Clearly by Rolf Dobelli

Our brains are wired to prefer the known over the unknown. This is why we tend to stick with the status quo, even when it may not be in our best interest. We have a bias towards things that are familiar to us, as they require less mental effort to process. This bias can lead us to make decisions that are not rational or beneficial. The status quo bias can manifest itself in various aspects of our lives, from our personal relationships to our financial decisions. We may stay in a job that we don't enjoy simply because it is what we are used to. We may keep our money in a low-interest savings account because we are afraid of the risks associated with investing, even though we could potentially earn higher returns. One of the reasons why we are so resistant to change is because we fear making the wrong decision. We would rather stick with what we know, even if it is not the best option, than take a chance on something new. This fear of regret can hold us back from taking risks that could lead to positive outcomes. To overcome the status quo bias, we must learn to critically evaluate our decisions and consider the alternatives. We should ask ourselves why we are choosing to maintain the status quo and whether it is truly the best option for us. By being aware of this bias and actively challenging it, we can make more informed and rational decisions in our lives. It is important to remember that change is a natural part of life and that staying in our comfort zone may prevent us from growing and reaching our full potential. By being open to new possibilities and willing to step out of our familiar routines, we can break free from the constraints of the status quo bias and make choices that align with our goals and aspirations.
