William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, and Edward Bates were among Lincoln's rivals for the Republican presidential nomination in 1860. Each of these men brought a unique set of skills and experiences to the table, making them worthy contenders in their own right. Seward, a former governor of New York and outspoken opponent of slavery, was considered the front-runner for much of the campaign. Chase, a former senator and governor of Ohio, was known for his anti-slavery stance and ambition for higher office. Bates, a former congressman and attorney general under President Fillmore, was respected for his legal expertise and moderate views on slavery. As the campaign progressed, Lincoln's rivals engaged in intense competition, each vying for the support of delegates and party leaders.
