Importance of focusing on segmental and suprasegmental aspects from "summary" of Teaching EFL Pronunciation: Why, What and How? by M Maniruzzaman
When teaching English as a foreign language, it is crucial to pay attention to both segmental and suprasegmental aspects of pronunciation. Segmental aspects refer to individual sounds or phonemes, while suprasegmental aspects involve features such as stress, intonation, and rhythm. Ignoring either aspect can lead to misunderstandings and miscommunication in language learning. Focusing on segmental aspects involves teaching students how to produce individual sounds accurately. This includes recognizing and producing the different vowel and consonant sounds in English. It also involves teaching students how to distinguish between similar sounds that may not exist in their native language. By mastering segmental aspects, students can improve their intelligibility and fluency in spoken English. On the other hand, suprasegmental aspects play a crucial role in conveying meaning and emotions in speech. Stress, intonation, and rhythm can change the meaning of a sentence or indicate the speaker's attitude or emotions. For example, stress placement can distinguish between nouns and verbs, while intonation patterns can signal questions or statements. By focusing on suprasegmental aspects, teachers can help students convey their intended meaning more effectively in spoken English. Students who master stress, intonation, and rhythm can sound more natural and fluent in their speech, making it easier for them to communicate with native speakers.- Both segmental and suprasegmental aspects are important in teaching EFL pronunciation. By paying attention to both aspects, teachers can help students improve their overall pronunciation skills and become more proficient communicators in English.
