Self-doubt plays a significant role, where individuals question their ability, knowledge, or worthiness to speak. This internal dialogue can create a cycle of anxiety, making the prospect of speaking feel overwhelming. Past experiences further compound this issue. A single negative encounter, such as stumbling over words or receiving harsh criticism, can imprint a lasting fear.
