Space stations orbit Earth from "summary" of Space Encyclopedia by David A. Aguilar,Christine Pulliam,Patricia Daniels

Space stations are remarkable habitats that circle our planet, providing astronauts with a place to live and work in space. These stations are like floating laboratories, allowing scientists to conduct experiments in a weightless environment. They are also vital for testing new technologies and preparing for future missions to other planets. The first space station, Salyut 1, was launched by the Soviet Union in 1971. Since then, several other space stations have been put into orbit around Earth, including Skylab, Mir, and the International Space Station (ISS). These stations are constantly inhabited by crews of astronauts who live and work in space for extended periods of time. Space stations orbit Earth at an altitude of several hundred kilometers above the planet's surface. They travel at incredible speeds, completing one orbit in about 90 minutes. This fast pace allows them to circle the planet multiple times a day, giving astronauts a breathtaking view of Earth from space. Living on a space station is not easy. Astronauts must adapt to microgravity, which can cause muscle and bone loss if not counteracted through exercise. They also face challenges such as limited space, recycled air and water, and the isolation of living in a confined environment far from home. Despite these challenges, space stations play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of space and preparing for future missions beyond Earth. They serve as stepping stones for exploring the cosmos and expanding humanity's presence in space. As we look to the stars, space stations will continue to be essential platforms for scientific research and human exploration.
