The successful moon landing by Apollo 11 was a monumental achievement in the history of space exploration. The mission was the culmination of years of planning, preparation, and hard work by thousands of individuals at NASA and its partner organizations. The Apollo program had been established by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 with the goal of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth before the end of the decade. The spacecraft that would carry the astronauts to the moon was the Apollo Command Module, which was designed to re-enter Earth's atmosphere and splash down in the ocean.
