Galaxies are far from "summary" of Space Encyclopedia by David A. Aguilar,Christine Pulliam,Patricia Daniels

The universe is a vast expanse that contains billions of galaxies, each filled with billions of stars. One of the most mind-boggling facts about galaxies is just how incredibly far away they are from us. In fact, some galaxies are so far away that the light we see from them today actually started its journey billions of years ago. The immense distances between galaxies can be difficult to grasp. To give you an idea of just how far away they are, consider this: the Milky Way, our own galaxy, is about 100,000 light-years across. This means that it would take light 100,000 years to travel from one end of the Milky Way to the other. Now imagine that there are galaxies out there that are millions or even billions of light-years away from us. The concept of galaxies being far away is not just a matter of distance – it also has to do with time. Because light takes time to travel from one place to another, when we look at a distant galaxy, we are actually looking back in time. This is because the light we see from that galaxy left it millions or even billions of years ago. So, when we observe a galaxy that is, say, 10 million light-years away, we are seeing it as it was 10 million years ago. The vast distances between galaxies play a crucial role in our understanding of the universe. By studying these distant galaxies, astronomers can learn more about the history of the cosmos, how galaxies form and evolve, and even the fate of the universe itself. It is truly humbling to think about the sheer scale of the universe and the incredible distances that separate us from other galaxies.
