Selfserving bias can affect how individuals perceive their own abilities from "summary" of Social Psychology by John R. Eiser,J. Richard Eiser
Self-serving bias refers to the tendency for individuals to attribute their successes to internal factors (such as their own abilities or efforts) while attributing their failures to external factors (such as bad luck or other people's actions). This bias can have a significant impact on how individuals perceive their own abilities. When individuals experience success, they are more likely to attribute it to their own skills or talents. This can lead to an inflated sense of their own abilities, as they may overlook the role of external factors or luck in their success. For example, a student who receives a high grade on a test may attribute it to their intelligence or hard work, rather than acknowledging the role of luck or an easy test. On the other hand, when individuals experience failure, they are more likely to attribute it to external factors beyond their control. This can protect their self-esteem by allowing them to maintain a positive self-image despite setbacks. For example, a job applicant who is not hired for a position may blame the company for being biased or unfair, rather than considering their own qualifications or interview performance.- Self-serving bias can distort individuals' perceptions of their own abilities by emphasizing internal factors in success and external factors in failure. This can lead to overconfidence in one's abilities, as well as a reluctance to take responsibility for failures. By being aware of this bias, individuals can strive to maintain a more balanced and realistic view of their own strengths and weaknesses.
