Voting rights are essential for equality from "summary" of So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo

When we talk about equality, we have to talk about voting rights. Because without the ability to vote, our voices are silenced. Our ability to shape our own destinies is taken away. Voting rights are not just about casting a ballot. They are about having a say in the decisions that affect our lives. They are about being seen and heard as equal members of society. Throughout history, voting rights have been denied to certain groups of people as a way to maintain power and control. It has been used as a tool of oppression, to keep marginalized communities from having a seat at the table. When we deny someone the right to vote, we are denying them their humanity. We are saying that their voices don't matter, that their experiences are not valid. Without voting rights, marginalized communities are left powerless. They are unable to advocate for themselves, to fight for the changes they need to thrive. They are left at the mercy of systems that were not built to serve them. We cannot talk about equality without addressing this fundamental injustice. When we fight for voting rights, we are fighting for the very heart of democracy. We are fighting for the idea that everyone deserves a voice, that everyone's opinion matters. We are fighting for a world where decisions are made with the input of all communities, not just the privileged few. In the struggle for equality, voting rights are essential. They are the bedrock on which we build a more just society. Without them, we are left with a system that perpetuates inequality and division. We must continue to fight for the right of every person to have a say in their own future.
