Automation has long been seen as a harbinger of mass unemployment, a fearsome tool that would inexorably consign countless workers to the scrap heap of history. This notion has been around since the early days of the industrial revolution. As machines became more sophisticated, the thinking went, they would take over more and more jobs, rendering human labor increasingly obsolete. The reality, however, has been far more nuanced.
