Avoiding electronics before bedtime from "summary" of Sleep Soundly Every Night, Feel Fantastic Every Day by Robert Steven Rosenberg
Electronic devices emit blue light, which can suppress the production of melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate our sleep-wake cycle. This can make it harder for us to fall asleep and stay asleep. Using electronic devices before bedtime can disrupt our circadian rhythm, making it more difficult for us to relax and unwind for a restful night's sleep. The stimulation from electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers, can also keep our brains active and engaged, making it harder for us to wind down and prepare for sleep. The constant notifications, alerts, and updates can create a sense of urgency and distract us from focusing on calming activities that promote relaxation before bedtime. Furthermore, the content we consume on electronic devices before bedtime can be stimulating and exciting, making it difficult for our minds to transition from a state of alertness to a state of relaxation. This can lead to racing thoughts, increased heart rate, and heightened stress levels, all of which can interfere with our ability to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.- We can create a more conducive environment for sleep. This means turning off electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime and engaging in calming activities, such as reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation. This can help signal to our bodies that it is time to wind down and prepare for sleep, ultimately improving the quality of our sleep and our overall health and well-being.
