Sexual jealousy is a social construct from "summary" of Sex at Dawn by Christopher Ryan,Cacilda Jetha
In the world we inhabit today, sexual jealousy seems to be an undeniable aspect of human nature. However, when we examine the roots of this emotion, we begin to see that its origins lie not in some innate, unchangeable human characteristic, but rather in the social constructs that have been developed over time. When we look back to our ancestors, the hunter-gatherer societies of our past, we find a very different picture when it comes to sexual relationships. In these societies, the idea of one man laying claim to one woman was virtually unheard of. Instead, individuals engaged in sexual activities with multiple partners, free from the constraints of possessiveness and jealousy. It was only with the rise of agriculture and the development of settled communities that the concept of sexual exclusivity began to take hold. As societies became more complex, so too did the rules governing sexual behavior. Men began to assert ownership over women, leading to the rise of jealousy as a means of protecting this perceived possession. This shift from a more communal approach to sexuality to one based on ownership and exclusivity has had profound implications for human relationships. Jealousy has become ingrained in our culture as a means of asserting control over our partners and maintaining the illusion of monogamy as the only legitimate form of relationship. However, when we step back and examine the roots of sexual jealousy, we begin to see that it is not an inherent aspect of human nature, but rather a social construct that has been imposed upon us over time. By understanding this, we can begin to question the assumptions that underlie our current beliefs about relationships and explore new possibilities for how we interact with one another.Similar Posts
