Monogamy is not natural for humans from "summary" of Sex at Dawn by Christopher Ryan,Cacilda Jetha
The idea that human beings are naturally monogamous is a deeply ingrained belief in our society. We are taught from a young age that monogamy is the only way to have a successful and fulfilling relationship. However, the reality is much more complex than that. When we look at the history of human sexuality, we see that monogamy is a relatively recent development. For most of our existence as a species, we lived in small, nomadic bands where relationships were much more fluid and flexible. Sexual behavior was not restricted to one partner, but instead was shared among the group. In these early societies, it was common for individuals to have multiple sexual partners. This was not seen as immoral or taboo, but rather as a natural expression of human sexuality. It was only with the rise of agriculture and the concept of private property that monogamy became the dominant form of relationship. The idea that monogamy is natural for humans is based on a misunderstanding of our evolutionary history. When we look at our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, we see that monogamy is the exception rather than the rule. Most primates, including chimpanzees and bonobos, engage in multiple sexual relationships. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that our early human ancestors also practiced non-monogamous behavior. The idea that monogamy is somehow hardwired into our DNA is simply not supported by the scientific evidence. By acknowledging the true nature of human sexuality, we can begin to question the societal norms that have been imposed upon us. We can start to have more open and honest conversations about our desires and needs, rather than conforming to outdated ideas of what a relationship should look like.- The concept of monogamy being natural for humans is a myth that has been perpetuated for far too long. It is time for us to embrace the complexity and diversity of human sexuality, and to move beyond the constraints of outdated social norms.
