Friar Laurence's carefully laid plan, designed to bring about peace between the feuding families of Verona, takes a turn for the worse. Juliet, in a desperate attempt to avoid marrying Paris, seeks the Friar's help. He gives her a potion that will make her appear dead for forty-two hours, allowing her to escape with Romeo. However, communication fails, and Romeo remains unaware of the plan. He hears of Juliet's "death" and rushes back to Verona to take his own life beside her.
