As a young black boy growing up in poverty and racism, I learned quickly that the world was not fair. I saw my parents struggle every day just to put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads. The color of our skin seemed to determine everything about our lives - where we could live, where we could go to school, and even how we were treated by others. Racism was like a shadow that followed us everywhere, reminding us that we were not welcome in certain places or among certain people. It was a constant presence, shaping our experiences and limiting our opportunities. I saw how my parents were treated differently because of their race, how they were denied jobs or promotions, how they were harassed by the police for no reason other than the color of their skin. Poverty was another harsh reality that we had to face every day. We lived in a run-down neighborhood where crime and violence were a part of daily life.
