Develop strategies for managing overwhelm with multiple interests from "summary" of Refuse to Choose! by Barbara Sher

When you're a Scanner with multiple interests, overwhelm can creep up on you faster than you can say "I'll do it all!" One minute you're excited about a new project, and the next you're drowning in a sea of unfinished tasks and unrealized dreams. That's where strategies come in handy. You need a game plan to keep overwhelm at bay and make sure your many interests don't end up overwhelming you. First and foremost, it's crucial to prioritize. Take a good, hard look at all your interests and figure out which ones are truly important to you. Which ones light a fire in your soul and make you want to jump out of bed in the morning? Focus on those. Let go of the rest, at least for now. It's okay to put some interests on the back burner while you pursue others with full force. Next, learn to say no. As a Scanner, you're probably used to saying yes to every opportunity that comes your way. But that can quickly lead to burnout and overwhelm. Practice setting boundaries and politely declining invitations or projects that don't align with your priorities. Remember, saying no to one thing means saying yes to something else – something that truly matters to you. Another key strategy is to break your goals down into smaller, manageable steps. When you have multiple interests pulling you in different directions, it's easy to feel like you're not making progress on any of them. By breaking your goals into bite-sized tasks, you can make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed. Celebrate each small win along the way – it will keep you motivated and focused. Lastly, don't be afraid to ask for help. You don't have to do it all alone. Reach out to friends, family, or fellow Scanners for support and guidance. Sometimes just talking through your overwhelm with someone who understands can provide a fresh perspective and help you see a way forward. With these strategies in your toolkit, you can manage overwhelm and thrive as a Scanner with multiple interests. Remember, it's not about doing it all – it's about doing what matters most to you. So prioritize, say no when necessary, break goals into smaller steps, and seek support when needed. You've got this!
