Providing a healthy balance of independence and support is key from "summary" of Raising Boys, Third Edition by Steve Biddulph

The most important thing we can do for our boys is to strike the right balance between giving them independence and providing them with support. It's a delicate dance, one that requires us to be attuned to their needs and abilities at all times. On one hand, we want to encourage our boys to explore the world on their own, to take risks and learn from their mistakes. This is how they develop confidence and resilience, two qualities that will serve them well throughout their lives. But at the same time, we need to be there for them when they stumble, ready to offer a helping hand or a listening ear. Finding this balance can be tricky, especially when our own fears and anxieties get in the way. It's natural to want to protect our children from harm, but we have to remember that they need to experience failure in order to grow. We can't shield them from every challenge or disappointment - that would only hinder their development. So how do we strike this balance? It starts with being present and attentive to our boys, tuning in to their cues and signals. We need to be able to read their body language and emotions, knowing when to step in and when to step back. Communication is key here - we need to create an open and honest dialogue with our boys so that they feel comfortable coming to us when they need help.
  1. Providing a healthy balance of independence and support is about empowering our boys to become the best versions of themselves. It's about giving them the tools they need to navigate the world with confidence and compassion. And it's about showing them that we believe in their abilities, even when they doubt themselves.
