Systemic racism perpetuates inequality in the education system from "summary" of Race, Class, and Education by Kenneth J. Meier,Joseph Stewart,Robert E. England

The issue of systemic racism in education is deeply rooted in our society, perpetuating a cycle of inequality that disproportionately affects marginalized communities. This systemic racism is evident in various aspects of the education system, from funding disparities to disciplinary practices. One of the key ways in which systemic racism manifests in education is through unequal funding distribution. Schools in predominantly white and affluent neighborhoods tend to receive more funding than schools in low-income communities of color. This disparity in funding directly impacts the quality of education and resources available to students, perpetuating a cycle of unequal opportunities. Furthermore, disciplinary practices in schools also reflect systemic racism. Students of color are often disproportionately suspended or expelled compared to their white counterparts for similar infractions. This punitive approach to discipline contributes to the school-to-prison pipeline, pushing marginalized students out of the education system and into the criminal justice system. Additionally, the curriculum taught in schools often fails to reflect the diverse experiences and histories of marginalized communities. This Eurocentric curriculum reinforces white supremacy and erases the contributions of people of color to society, perpetuating a narrative of inferiority among non-white students.
  1. Systemic racism in the education system perpetuates inequality by creating barriers to success for marginalized communities. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive and intersectional approach that challenges the status quo and centers the voices and experiences of those most affected by these inequities. By dismantling systemic racism in education, we can work towards a more just and equitable society for all.
