Private governments undermine the principles of democracy and equality from "summary" of Private Government by Elizabeth Anderson

Private governments, such as corporations, wield immense power over individuals in their employ. This power dynamic results in a hierarchical relationship where employers exercise authority and control over employees' lives within the workplace. This form of governance is inherently undemocratic as it restricts individuals' autonomy and decision-making power. Furthermore, private governments often operate without transparency or accountability to those they govern. This lack of oversight allows for arbitrary decision-making by employers, which can lead to unfair treatment, discrimination, and exploitation of employees. In contrast to a democratic government where policies are subject to public scrutiny and accountability, private governments are often shielded from such scrutiny, further undermining the principles of democracy. In addition, private governments can perpetuate inequalities within society. The hierarchical structure within corporations can reinforce existing social hierarchies based on factors such as race, gender, and class. Discriminatory practices within private governments can further marginalize already disadvantaged groups, perpetuating inequalities and hindering progress towards a more equitable society. The concentration of power within private governments also has implications for economic inequality. The disproportionate power held by employers enables them to dictate terms of employment, including wages and working conditions, with little input from employees. This power imbalance can result in exploitative practices that further exacerbate economic disparities between the wealthy few who control private governments and the working class who are subject to their authority.
  1. The existence of private governments undermines the principles of democracy and equality by concentrating power in the hands of a few, restricting individual autonomy, perpetuating social inequalities, and fostering undemocratic governance structures. These private entities operate outside the realm of democratic oversight and accountability, posing a threat to the foundational principles of democracy and equality that are essential for a just and equitable society.
