In the workplace, the power dynamics between employers and employees often mirror those of a government ruling over its subjects. The employer possesses authority to make decisions that significantly impact the lives of their employees, from setting wages and work hours to determining job responsibilities and disciplinary measures. This unequal distribution of power creates a system in which the employer wields control over the employee’s life both within and outside the workplace. This form of governance within organizations perpetuates systemic inequalities by reinforcing hierarchies that are based on factors such as race, gender, and social class. Those in positions of power use their authority to maintain their privileged status and limit the opportunities available to those beneath them.
