Employers wield authoritarian power over employees' working conditions from "summary" of Private Government by Elizabeth Anderson

Employers exercise significant control over employees' working conditions. This authority extends beyond the workplace to impact various aspects of employees' lives. For instance, employers can dictate when and where employees work, monitor their activities, and impose penalties for perceived infractions. This level of control is akin to that of a private government, where employers act as authoritarian rulers. Employees are subject to a range of rules and regulations set by employers. These rules govern not only employees' behavior at work but also their personal lives. Employers may dictate what employees can and cannot do outside of work, such as engaging in certain activities or affiliations. This intrusion into employees' private lives blurs the line between work and personal time, further consolidating employers' power. Moreover, the hierarchical structure within organizations reinforces the authoritarian power of employers. Employees are expected to comply with directives from superiors without question, creating a dynamic reminiscent of traditional authoritarian regimes. This power dynamic can stifle dissent and discourage employees from challenging unfair or discriminatory practices. The lack of transparency and accountability in many workplaces exacerbates the authoritarian nature of employers' power. Decisions affecting employees' working conditions are often made behind closed doors, without input from those directly impacted. This opacity allows employers to maintain control without facing scrutiny or opposition from employees.
  1. The relationship between employers and employees mirrors that of a ruler and subjects in a private government. Employers wield authoritarian power over various aspects of employees' lives, shaping their experiences and limiting their autonomy. This dynamic raises questions about the ethics and implications of such unchecked power in the modern workplace.
