Forces cause changes in motion from "summary" of Physics 11 by British Columbia. Schools Department. Curriculum Development Branch
The concept that forces cause changes in motion is a fundamental principle in physics. When an object is at rest or in motion, it will remain in that state unless acted upon by an external force. This means that an object will continue on its current path and speed without any interference. However, when a force is applied to an object, it will cause a change in its motion. Forces can be classified into two main categories: contact forces and non-contact forces. Contact forces are exerted when two objects physically touch each other, such as when pushing a book across a table or kicking a soccer ball. Non-contact forces, on the other hand, act at a distance without any physical contact, like gravitational forces or magnetic forces. The effect of a force on an object can be described by Newton's laws of motion. According to Newton's first law, an object will remain at rest or in motion at a constant velocity unless acted upon by an external force. This is also known as the law of inertia, which states that objects resist changes in their motion. Newton's second law states that the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass. In simpler terms, the greater the force applied to an object, the greater its acceleration will be. This law can be expressed by the equation F = ma, where F represents the force applied, m is the mass of the object, and a is the acceleration produced. Finally, Newton's third law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This means that when one object exerts a force on another object, the second object will exert an equal and opposite force back on the first object. This law explains phenomena such as the recoil of a gun when fired or the propulsion of a rocket in space.- Forces are essential in causing changes in motion. Whether through contact or non-contact forces, the application of force can alter the state of an object's motion. By understanding and applying Newton's laws of motion, we can better comprehend the relationship between forces and changes in motion.
