The origin of the elements from "summary" of The Magic of Reality by Richard Dawkins
The universe is made up of a vast array of different elements, each with its own unique properties and characteristics. But where did all these elements come from? The answer to this question lies in the processes that occur inside stars. Stars are essentially massive nuclear reactors, where hydrogen atoms are fused together to form helium. This process, known as nuclear fusion, releases a tremendous amount of energy in the form of light and heat. As the star continues to burn, it fuses heavier and heavier elements, all the way up to iron. But iron is a special case - it is the point at which nuclear fusion stops being a viable source of energy for the star. At this point, the star begins to collapse under its own gravity, eventually leading to a catastrophic explosion known as a supernova. During...Similar Posts
