Confidence is not always a predictor of competence from "summary" of Perfectly Confident by Don A. Moore

One common mistake we make is assuming that individuals who exude confidence must necessarily be competent. In reality, confidence and competence are not always correlated. We tend to be drawn to people who are self-assured, mistaking their confidence for actual ability. This phenomenon is known as the "confidence heuristic" - we use confidence as a mental shortcut to judge someone's capabilities. The problem with relying on confidence as a predictor of competence is that confidence can be easily faked or inflated. People can project an air of certainty without actually possessing the skills or knowledge to back it up. This disconnect between confidence and competence can lead us astray, causing us to overestimate someone's abilities based solely on their level of self-assurance. Moreover, individuals who are truly competent may not always exhibit high levels of confidence. They may be humble or self-critical, downplaying their skills and expertise. This lack of confidence can be misleading, as others may underestimate their capabilities due to their modesty. As a result, true competence can go unrecognized or undervalued in favor of those who are more outwardly confident. It is important to recognize that confidence and competence are separate constructs that do not always align. We must be wary of falling into the trap of assuming that confidence equals competence. Instead, we should strive to look beyond surface-level confidence and assess individuals based on their actual skills, knowledge, and track record. By doing so, we can avoid being misled by the illusion of confidence and make more accurate judgments about people's abilities.
