Recognizing and validating emotions validates a child's experience from "summary" of Parenting from the Inside Out by Daniel J. Siegel MD,Mary Hartzell

When we take the time to acknowledge and accept a child's emotions, we are essentially saying, "I see you. I hear you. Your feelings are valid." In doing so, we are validating their experience and helping them feel understood and supported. By recognizing and validating a child's emotions, we are fostering a sense of emotional safety and security within them. This validation helps them develop a strong sense of self-worth and confidence in their own emotions. It also teaches them that it is okay to feel and express their feelings, without fear of judgment or rejection. When a child's emotions are recognized and validated, they learn to trust their own feelings and instincts. This trust is essential for healthy emotional development and forming secure attachments with others. By showing empathy and understanding towards a child's emotions, we are building a foundation of trust and connection that will benefit them throughout their lives. By validating their emotions, we are teaching them that their feelings matter and deserve to be acknowledged. This validation helps children develop a healthy emotional intelligence and learn how to navigate their own emotions in a healthy way.
  1. We are helping them make sense of their experiences and learn how to regulate their emotions effectively. This validation also helps children feel seen and heard, which is crucial for their overall well-being and mental health. By acknowledging a child's emotions, we are creating a safe space for them to express themselves authentically and without fear of judgment. This validation builds a strong emotional bond between parent and child, fostering a relationship built on trust, empathy, and understanding. Ultimately, recognizing and validating a child's emotions is a powerful tool for supporting their emotional development and nurturing their overall well-being.
