Identity formation from "summary" of On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

Our identities are shaped by the stories we inherit, the language we speak, the places we come from. They are woven from the threads of memory, trauma, and desire. Identity is not fixed but fluid, a process of becoming, of unbecoming, of remaking oneself in the image of who we want to be. It is a journey of self-discovery, of reckoning with the past and envisioning the future. Growing up as a Vietnamese American, I struggled to navigate the complexities of my dual heritage. I felt torn between two worlds, neither fully belonging to one nor the other. I grappled with questions of identity, of where I fit in, of who I am meant to be. I sought to reconcile the disparate parts of myself, to find a sense of wholeness in the fragments of my past. As I embarked on this journey of self-exploration, I encountered moments of clarity and confusion, of joy and sorrow. I unearthed buried memories, confronted buried traumas, embraced buried desires.
