Confusion about identity from "summary" of No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai

The feeling of not belonging to any particular group or category is a common theme that runs throughout the novel. The protagonist struggles to find his place in the world, constantly grappling with a sense of alienation and disconnect from those around him. This confusion about identity is further exacerbated by his own self-destructive tendencies, which only serve to deepen his feelings of isolation. As the protagonist navigates through various relationships and social situations, he is unable to shake off the nagging sense of inadequacy that plagues him. He puts on different masks and personas in an attempt to fit in, but ultimately realizes that none of these facades can provide him with a true sense of belonging. This constant shifting of identities leaves him feeling lost and disconnected, unable to establish a stable sense of self. The protagonist's internal struggle with his own identity is mirrored in his external behavior, as he engages in reckless and self-destructive actions in a misguided attempt to find meaning and purpose in his life. His inability to reconcile his true self with the expectations and demands of society only serves to deepen his sense of confusion and despair.
