Jordan navigates two different worlds: home and school from "summary" of New Kid by Jerry Craft

At home, Jordan is surrounded by his family and the familiar sights and sounds of his neighborhood. His parents are loving and supportive, always encouraging him to do his best. They understand him in a way that no one else can, providing a sense of comfort and belonging that is unmatched. But even in this safe space, Jordan feels out of place at times, as if he doesn't quite fit in with the expectations and traditions of his family. School, on the other hand, is a completely different world for Jordan. Here, he is one of the few kids of color in a predominantly white institution. He navigates through hallways filled with students who don't look like him, who come from different backgrounds and have different experiences. Jordan tries to find his place among his classmates, some of whom are friendly and welcoming, while others are ignorant and insensitive. The contrast between home and school is stark, and Jordan often feels torn between these two worlds. At home, he can be himself without fear of judgment or misunderstanding. But at school, he must constantly adapt and adjust to fit in, to make others comfortable with his presence. The pressure to conform weighs heavily on him, as he struggles to find a balance between his identity at home and the persona he presents at school. Despite the challenges he faces, Jordan remains resilient and determined. He learns to embrace his differences and stand up for himself in the face of prejudice and ignorance. Through his experiences, Jordan begins to understand that he doesn't have to choose between his home life and his school life – he can be proud of who he is in both worlds, unapologetically and authentically. Jordan's journey to navigate these two different worlds is a powerful and poignant exploration of identity, belonging, and the complexities of adolescence.
