Jordan learns about privilege and bias from "summary" of New Kid by Jerry Craft

Throughout the story, Jordan is faced with situations that challenge his understanding of privilege and bias. As he navigates his new school, Riverdale Academy Day School, Jordan quickly realizes that he is one of the few students of color in a predominantly white environment. This realization leads him to question the dynamics of privilege and bias that are at play in his daily interactions with his peers and teachers. Jordan's experiences at Riverdale Academy Day School shed light on the disparities in opportunities and treatment that exist based on race and socioeconomic status. He observes how his white classmates are afforded certain privileges and advantages that he does not have access to, such as being automatically assumed to be wealthy or academically gifted. This stark contrast opens Jordan's eyes to the systemic biases that are deeply ingrained in society. As Jordan grapples with these revelations, he also becomes more attuned to the microaggressions and stereotypes that he faces on a regular basis. From being mistaken for the only other black student in his grade to being singled out as the token black friend, Jordan is constantly reminded of the biases that others hold towards him. These experiences force him to confront the ways in which his own identity is shaped by the perceptions and prejudices of those around him. Despite the challenges that Jordan faces, he begins to find his voice and stand up against the injustices and inequalities that he witnesses. Through his art and creative expression, Jordan is able to channel his frustrations and communicate his experiences in a way that resonates with others. As he learns to navigate the complexities of privilege and bias, Jordan grows more confident in his identity and his ability to effect change in his community.
  1. Jordan's journey in understanding privilege and bias is a powerful exploration of the ways in which our social identities shape our experiences and interactions with the world. By confronting these issues head-on, Jordan not only learns more about himself but also inspires those around him to think critically about the systems of power and oppression that affect us all.
