The mole concept helps in counting atoms and molecules from "summary" of NCERT Chemistry Class 11 - [CBSE Board] by Dr. S. C. Rastogi, ,Er. Meera Goyal
The mole concept is a fundamental concept in chemistry that helps us in counting atoms and molecules. It provides a way to measure the amount of a substance by relating it to its mass. By using the mole concept, we can easily determine the number of atoms or molecules present in a given sample of a substance. In the mole concept, one mole of any substance contains Avogadro's number of particles, which is approximately 6.022 x 10^23. This number is based on the number of atoms in 12 grams of carbon-12, which is defined as one mole. By knowing this number, we can calculate the number of atoms or molecules in any given sample by simply using the formula: Number of particles = Number of moles x Avogadro's number This formula allows us to convert between the mass of a substance and the number of atoms or molecules it contains. It is particularly useful when dealing with large quantities of atoms or molecules, where counting them individually would be impractical. For example, if we have a sample of oxygen gas with a mass of 32 grams, we can use the mole concept to determine the number of oxygen molecules present in the sample. By dividing the mass by the molar mass of oxygen (16 g/mol), we find that there are 2 moles of oxygen in the sample. Multiplying this by Avogadro's number, we can calculate that there are approximately 1.2044 x 10^24 oxygen molecules in the sample.- The mole concept simplifies the process of counting atoms and molecules by providing a standardized unit of measurement that relates mass to the number of particles present. It allows chemists to work with large quantities of substances more easily and accurately, making it an essential tool in the field of chemistry.
